Technical Outlook (25th May 2009)

As already mentioned yesterday "The opening gap of Monday is still exerting selling pressure on index based stocks which are causing Nifty to decline while on other hand, scores of small & midcap stocks are giving bullish breakouts day after day. Nifty can decline by more than 120 points if it closes below 4180, on the other hand decisive move above 4310 can lift Nifty to 4425+ in coming sessions. ". Nifty opened on a flat note & after initial zigzag movement it declined to touch an intra day low of 4155, however renewed buying interest in select index based stocks lifted the index to touch an intra day high of 4249 (rise of 95 points) before closing at 4238, about 27 points above the previous close.

As far as, extreme short term charts are concerned, Nifty is declining in a bullish "Falling Wedge" pattern having resistance around 4250 & breakout from where can give an upmove of 100+ points in coming sessions. On the other hand, a huge gap between 3700 & 5150 may continue to discourage investors from making fresh commitments.

As for as bar reversal in Daily charts are concerned, stocks like ICICI, Reliance Ind., SBI, L&T, Suzlon, BHEL, Infosys, Kotak, ITC, Essar Oil have given "Upward Bar Reversal" while ONGC, Rcomm, GMR, Fed Bank, Tata Chem., Allahabad Bank, Aurobindo Pharma, Inox, Ruchi, Godrej etc. have given "Downward Bar Reversal". Stocks like Aftek, Trigyn, Kajaria, Visaka, Tata Metalik, Astra Micro, Lokesh Machine, Surya Roshni, TN Petro, Thomas Cook, Deepak Fert., FSL, Network 18 have shown  spurt during the day with unusually high volumes.

Sector wise, select stocks like NIIT Ltd., FSL, NDTV, Deepak Fert., Aptech Training, Satyam, Religare, Fortis, Tech. Mahindra, JP Hydro, Dish TV, etc. rallied by 10%-20% in an otherwise lack luster market. On the bearish side, stocks like Tata Chem., Titan, Sterlite, LIC Hous. Fin., M&M, DLF & Tata Motors etc. continued to slide during the day. As far as, A/D data is concerned it was in favor of bulls, in the ratio of 3:1 with 314 declines & 955 advances during the day.

In nutshell, Nifty has been declining in a bullish "Falling Wedge" pattern & it is likely to touch 4265-4310 in next couple of sessions. On the downside, it has strong support between 4125-4150 & decisive breakout from these levels can wipe off more than 100 points of Nifty.   The best strategy should be to continue to book profit in highly overbought stocks which have risen 40%-60% in last 3-4 days &  focus on mid & small cap stocks which have given bullish breakout in daily charts for minimum gain of 50% or so in next few weeks.
